Fox Movietone

While searching the Fox Movietone News database please be aware of several issues and problems:

The data entry was generated from microfilm copies of the original card files. This was done in the 1990's and the condition of the cards, some of which were already over 70 years old, was not very good. This especially applies to items from the 1940s and before, basically before World War II. The database provides reasonably thorough searches for post WWII materials, but a complete search for footage prior to the war frequently requires a search in our microfilm copy of the card file. Your local sales representative will inform you of this and pass your request directly to Movietone in New York to complete you research if necessary.

Since the descriptions in the database come from the original file cards the language used reflects the time when it was written. Much of this would be considered politically incorrect in today's world, but you need to think in the language of the time in order to complete an efficient search, and please do not be offended by references (e.g. to women and minorities) which you may find.

The Movietone collection consists of 35mm and 16mm film. Most of the 35mm materials that still existed in the early 1990s are readily available and have been transferred to videotape from film. They can be recognized in the database by the frame capture that accompanies the description. The 16mm component exists on the original film only so keep in mind that additional time (up to one week) and transfer costs will be applied to your order. Instead of a frame capture the 16mm items won't display a picture and usually contain '16mm' at the end of the description. The 16mm materials are held off site and it takes an extra day to retrieve before converting to video.
